Join our mission to build an equitable and sustainable food system in Oakland.

OFPC Membership Application Overview

Oakland Food Policy Council members participate in ten council meetings each year (on the third Thursday of every month at 5:00 pm, except for November and December). Each OFPC monthly meeting includes a work group meeting with a full council report back.

OFPC Membership Requirements

1. Oakland residence or employment in Oakland, or in the case of regional/rural applicants, a strong interest and investment in the Oakland food system.

2. Ability to follow our meeting attendance policy and actively participate.

3. Commitment to transforming the Oakland food system into an equitable and sustainable system.

4. Representation of one of the five food system sectors (production, processing, distribution, consumption, waste management) and one of the following “working communities”:

a. Business Community and Food Entrepreneur

b. Labor

c. Community Organizations, Resident Groups, Neighborhood Associations

d. Rural and Regional Organizations

e. Health, Environmental, Education , Food Policy, and Economic Development Organizations

f. Local Government

5. Respect for the complexity and sensitivity of the OFPC’s work with diverse partners and appreciation for the need for personal and group skills in diversity management, problem solving, decision-making, and “getting to yes.”

6. Commitment to reaching out to a wide variety of people and entities within an applicant’s “working community” to ensure applicants understand “working community” needs, expertise, and resources.

7. Commitment to working in the public interest. OFPC members are expected to bring certain expertise to the table for the benefit of Oakland residents and the Oakland food system, rather than to representing specific organizations that members may be affiliated with.

8. Fundraising commitment of $200

Adult OFPC members serve three-year terms, and may re-apply at the end of their term. Youth OFPC members will serve one-year terms, and may re-apply at the end of their term. Term limits TBD.

New members will be announced by September 6th, 2011. A new member orientation will be held on September 8, 2011 at 5:00 pm, and new members will attend the September 15, 2011 OFPC meeting.

New Funding Opportunity for Connecting Youth with Nature

E-mail Print PDF

Funding Opportunity: Connecting Youth with Nature 2012 Grants Available for FS Units and Their Partners – Proposals Due 9/19

Approximately $243,000 in funding is available to support grant awards in the range of $2,500 to $20,000. It is estimated that the average award amount will be $15,000 for 16 grants. Applications are due by September 19, 2012.

These grants are made possible through a partnership between the National Environmental Education Foundation, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management.

We are pleased to announce a new funding opportunity for our critical youth outreach and education work. Built in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), and led by our good partners, the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF), this funding opportunity will provide small grants (<$20,000) to partnership projects that connect kids with nature through recreation, learning and stewardship on our public lands.

The America’s Great Outdoors: Connecting Youth with Nature 2012 grants are an important contribution to our efforts to link youth with their treasured public lands. Responsive to President Obama’s America’s Great Outdoors initiative, these funds may help you reach more youth, build new partnerships, or sustain and grow existing efforts to connect kids with nature. Together with the earlier NFWF AGO: Nurturing the Next Generation of Conservationists granting program that supports youth employment in conservation, these new funding opportunities engage our Congressionally-chartered foundations in supporting our critical youth outreach and engagement efforts.

Forest Service units are eligible to receive these funds, as are organizations that partner with FS and/or BLM units – all proposals must document at least a 1:1 non-federal match for grant funds requested. The attached RFP, news release, and NEEF program website http://www.neefusa.org/grants/connecting_youth.htm provide helpful information to consider this opportunity, and to prepare a strong proposal. You can create your proposal online – and they are due September 19, 2012.

We encourage you to share this opportunity with your partners, and consider taking advantage of this unique funding opportunity.
