ACTION ALERT - SAVE THE PREVENTION FUND!

FULL HOUSE VOTE ON FRIDAY, 4/27!

CALL or EMAIL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE ASAP!

Dear SOPHE Members,

The Energy & Commerce Committee passed a "savings" proposal yesterday to eliminate the Prevention &Public Health Fund -- and now the measure will move for a full House of Representatives vote tomorrow, Friday, April 27th.

This time, the Fund is on the chopping block to offset an increase in student loan interest rates.

Legislators need to hear from YOU that no one is saved when we do not invest in prevention. We cannot protect and promote the health of the public when such a vital source of support is at stake.

We STRONGLY URGE you to call or e-mail your Member of Congress in the House of Representatives, and stand up for prevention! (See http://www.house.gov/representatives/ )

Some talking points include:

  • This proposal will threaten our core public health infrastructure, the workforce, and the economy.
  • This proposal will negatively impact our most vulnerable populations and further exacerbate health disparities.
  • Protecting the nation's health by investing in prevention and evidence-based public health programs is a priority.
  • Disabling vital prevention programs will hurt communities, families, and individuals of all ages.
  • Investing in prevention is vital to ensuring the long-term fiscal health of the nation.

For additional information and talking points, please see our fact sheets located at: http://www.sophe.org/AdvocacyToolkit.cfm and/or 2012 Advocacy summit fact sheets www.healtheducationadvocate.org

We must use our voices to ensure that our elected leaders know that public health should not take the brunt of budget cuts. Congress needs to hear from you NOW!

Thank you for STANDING UP for Health Education and the public's health!

Elaine Auld, MPH, MCHES

Chief Executive Officer

Support American Cancer Society and Proposition 29!

E-mail Print PDF

Looking for an internship or a project to do to help fight cancer!

American Cancer Society's phone bank in Campbell is trying to raise support for Prop 29. Proposition 29 will put a $1 tax on tobacco products and fund cancer research. If the proposition passes, it would mean a 13.7% decrease in the amount of teen smoking, and save $6 billion dollars in California alone. The tobacco companies have the money to put out flashy ads against Prop 29, so it's really important to get the word out to all the California voters.

The phone bank could really use the support, so we need to get the word out and get some volunteers!

Please take a look at this link. It's a video on real people whose lives have been touched this issue.
If you would also like to look up for information on your own, visit, www.proposition29.org.
